Pipila ka pares sa tiil ang gapunduk

sulud sa jeep:

niay abugun, layu guru’g gilakwan

nia puy puwa’g kuku, gisuluta’g sinaw nga sandalyas

niay gatagu sulud sa leather black nga sapatos

ug niay sama naku, ga-blue nga sneakers.

Ig huut aning jeep

ang ubang pares kay magtinamakay

ug ang padung matamakan

mahimung kaka — mukamang

ug kung paspas, maka-ikyas ug tago sulod sa kuweba

ubus sa lingkuranan.

Naa puy mga pares nga

kiat ug dagway, musayaw ug tago

kay ang dalunggan sa nanag-iya

gipaslaka’g musika

maung mahimung bungul

(o magpabungul-bungul)

 — di mudawat sa namalihug ug plete.

Ug nia puy mga pares

nga sa kalayu sa biyahe,

natiman-an na ang pagpuyu ug paghuwat

kay kabalo ning mga tiila

nga ang jeep muhunung

ug sama sa uban

kinahanglan ang pares nga munaug,

mulakaw ug mutamak

sa ilang kaugalingung salug.

Several pairs of feet have

settled inside the jeepney:

here are dusty pairs, might’ve walked far

some had red nails, put on shiny sandals

some cower inside the leather black shoes

and some, like me, wore blue sneakers.

When the jeepney is full

some pairs would step on each other

and those pairs that will be stepped on

become a spider — crawling

and when fast enough

escape and hide inside the cave

beneath the seat.

Some pairs are restless

dancing in discreet

because the ears of its owner

are plugged with music

turning them deaf (or feigning deafness)

— won’t take the passed fare.

And there are pairs

that with great distance

remember to stay still and wait

because these pairs knew

the jeepney will stop

and like the others

the pair needs to step down,

walk and step on

its own floor.
